I created this motif for a pattern booklet of spirals that I am working on. It contains a brief introduction to freeform and a chance to try out a variation of one of the most popular freeform motifs (spiral). The finished piece measures 4”X2.75” and could potentially be used as anything from a project embellishment to component of a larger freeform project such as a tote bag, pillow, or jacket.

To replicate the piece you will need the following fingering weight yarn available at www.knitpicks.com:

Palette – Tea Rose
Palette – Victorian
Palette – Hollyberry

This particular pattern can be worked exactly as-is with worsted weight yarn but the finished product will, obviously, be a bit larger (See the motif worked in blue and white).

Size D Aluminum crochet hook
Small yarn needle
Scissors
Handheld garment steamer (optional)

This pattern uses a great deal of basic stitches (sc, hdc, dc, etc.). The puff stitch and the picot are the only ones I would call even a bit intermediate although the actual construction itself might be a little challenging for beginning crocheters. For the inside part of the spiral it is necessary to keep to colors of yarn attached to the piece and alternate between them. I do also use a magic circle but a circle of 5 ch would suffice.

The pattern is 6 pages long and contains 10 full-color photos. It is a digital pdf file. No physical item will be sent. You will be able to download the pattern as soon as your payment clears.

If you have any questions please don’t be shy. I love talking about freeform (or just about any other type of crochet). I have all sorts of interesting resources stashed on my computer. Its amazing what can be learned from the asking of a simple question (by both the person asking and the person being asked).
