I’m excited about this short-row mat from the early 1900s because you decide when your mat is done and it will lie FLAT! My crocheted doilies were never flat. Just knit short-row wedges until you’re done! (I worked 20 wedges.) I used a simple turn and slip stitch for short rows but feel free to use your favorite turn method. Variegated yarn makes the short rows pop but use whatever yarn or thread you like.
The mat is 10 inches in diameter at gauge. It took me about 4 hours to complete this mat using Lana Grossa’s Meilenweit 100 Cotone Vegano Frutti, color: 8206.

Skills needed: cast on, slip, knit, purl, short rows and bind off in knit stitch.
Optional: provisional cast-on

Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
