Ebbelwoi is the word for “Apfelwein” in my native Hessian dialect, which is a rather tart kind of apple cider. It’s typically served in a special grey stoneware jug with a blue pattern calleWesterwald pottery, named after the Kannenbäckerland (literally jug bakers’ land) in the Westerwald region in southwest Germany. I personally prefer English style cider over Ebbelwoi, but you gotta respect the traditions, right?!⁠

The Ebbewoi Cowl is worked seamlessly in the round, using a provisional cast on and grafting to join both ends after you finished knitting. It features some textured stripes, a stranded colourwork section, and a very subtle shaping using short rows.

The sample shows the cowl in Brooklyn Tweed in Snowbound, Woodsmoke and Almanac. The fit is on the looser side so it fits over most adult heads and/or dramatic hair.

Gauge and Needles
25 sts x 38 rounds = 10 x 10 cm (4 x 4 in) worked in stockinette in the round
If your colourwork tends to be tighter than your stockinette, try going up a needle size for the colourwork part.

The pattern uses written instructions combined with charts for the colourwork.
