Construction:
The shawl begins with a small number of stitches and is knit sideways with increases to its widest point. The edging is knit at the same time as the body of the shawl. It is then knit without increasing for a while, and then the increased stitches are decreased away, at which point the shawl is finished.

Skill Level: Intermediate; basic stitches, lace patterning on every row, simple shaping
Techniques: Knitting, yarn over increases, increase by knitting into front and back of a stitch, single and double decreases
Gauge: 18 stitches & 28 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in garter stitch after blocking
Finished size: 75” (190.5 cm) long x 15.25” (39 cm) deep (There is also a schematic on page 6 that has more detailed sizing information.)

Notes:
• Pattern is offered in both written and charted formats.
• Because the shawl is knit sideways, you begin and end with a small number of stitches, and never have long, tedious rows to work.
• Shawl size is very customizable, work more/less increase rows to modify the depth, more/less rows to modify the length, or omit the work even rows for a triangular shape.
• Garter stitch basis means not only is the shawl reversible, but that both sides are identical.

Pattern Inspiration:
When I look at cozy, homespun yarns like this, I want to see them play dress-up. I thought it would be fun to make a version of the classic single-ply, cobweb weight Shetland shawl, but to expand it to a more modern-life-friendly gauge and silhouette. This humble yarn would never boast on its own behalf, so I did it instead by naming the shawl “Ederne,” which is the Basque word for “beautiful.”
