2009 marks the 250th anniversary of Edward Young’s Conjectures of Original Composition. It is a philosophical tract that explores ideas of originality and creativity in literature. My favourite section of it, which inspired Edward, is this:

Originals shine, like comets; have no peer in their path; are rival’d by none, and the gaze of all: All other compositions (if they shine at all) shine in clusters; like the stars in the galaxy; where, like bad neighbours, all suffer from all; each particular being diminished, and almost lost in the throng.

The idea for Edward came about at a two-day symposium on originality in the long eighteenth century: its star-shape and lace express the uniqueness of Young’s star-crossed analogy well.
Edward is perfect for the whole of winter: for those long nights leading up to the holidays, when it’s cold out (but not as cold as in the new year) and the darkness seems to decrease the temperature tenfold; for your first kiss on New Year’s Day, when the stars above match the star on your head; the lazyness of post-Holidays January; February’s sparkly snow.
