Efficiency Mittens
These mittens are designed in such a way that they may be strip knitted. This means knitting mitten after mitten
with waste yarn between them. Only the thumbs must
be done separately. When a lot of mittens are needed, this technique can be a real time saver. But you don’t have to knit oodles in a strip. They are great mittens one
pair at a time, too.
YARN, GAUGE & MACHINE
These mittens are sized for adults and intended to be made with fingering weight yarn knitted to make a fairly dense fabric on a standard gauge or Passap machine. Adjust the
stitch size so as to get 35 stitches/44 rows per 4”. The samples are made with alpaca yarn that is fuzzy and lofts quite a bit so stitch size 7 on a Studio 328 was used. With smoother synthetic yarns, a smaller stitch size may be needed to get the gauge. No ribber is required but an option that uses one is included. Use weights as needed for your machine. I found that a few claw weights did help on the 328. Passap knitters, you will probably prefer to use the true ribbing option given later in the pattern. It is actually easier than mock ribbing on your machine.
SIZES
Circumference of 7, 7.5, 8, 8.5, 9”
Hand length of 6, 6.5, 7, 7.5, 8”
These correspond to small ladies for the first size. Medium ladies and small men’s hands share the second size. Large ladies and medium men’s hands share the 3rd size. The 4th and 5th sizes are men’s large and
extra large. It is perfectly fine to tweak the pattern to personal fit as long as an odd number of stitches is always used.
