Eggemoggin Gansey Hat
Eggemoggin Gansey Hat is named after a cove off the coast of Maine that once was used by Native Americans for catching fish using weirs. Eggemoggin is an alteration of the Abanaki word “where the Fish Weirs Are”. The rhythmical texture of this hat is a creative and symbolic interpretation of a fishing weir structure inspired by stitch patterns from British fisherman ganseys.
Round-by-round instructions are accompanied by a chart for the body of the hat. Knit from the bottom up, shaping occurs at crown with purl decreases to echo the garter stitches in the body of the hat. Pattern is written using two colors to add contemporary flair. A DK weight, densely plied yarn knit down on smaller needles allows for a warmer hat. Chosen yarn has elasticity and appealing crisp stitch definition.
This hat has been tech edited and test knitted.
Skill Level: advance beginner to intermediate.
Gauge: 24 sts & 44 rnds = 4” with 3.25mm/US 3, 16” circular ndl in pattern: welts and 4x4 knit & garter rib pattern as written in the Body of the pattern with a wet block.
Size: Finished circumference in superwash yarn is 20” with no wet blocking. 21”, after full water immersion blocking. Adjust the circumference size of the hat by adjusting gauge: go down a needle size for a smaller hat, or go up a needle size for a larger fit.
Finished Length is 7.75”.
