The perfect fitting balaclava! Approved by mothers, kindergarten teachers and children alike, according to the feedback I’ve got. English pattern now available!

The balaclava begins by knitting the hat piece, which is worked back and forth in garter stitch starting from the front, shaped with short rows throughout and decreases in the back. The construction reminds of a short row sock heel (minus the decreases). The short rows are made with German short row technique: at every turn, the first stitch is pulled to form a double stitch. If you’re not familiar with the technique, you can find useful tutorials online.

You have the option to make decorative “seams” to the hat piece between the middle and side stitches. (See the light green version in the picture.) They are made by slipping the first and last stitch of the middle part on the wrong side and knitting them normally on the right side.

When the hat piece is finished, the work is joined in the round to knit the neck rib and the stockinette stitch collar with raglan increases. Finally, you have two options to finish the face opening: brim or rib. (See the picture for both versions.) The brim is cast off using the Icelandic bind off technique, which goes neatly together with garter stitch.

Finish with cute pom poms or bunny ears!

Sizes: nb (0–3 m) 3–6 m (6–12 m) 1–2 y (2–4 y) 4–7 y. For head circumference of about 33–36 (36–40) 40–44 (44–46) 48 (50) 52–54 cm / 13 (14–15) 16–17 (18) 19 (20) 21 in.

Yarn: Sandnes Sunday (50 g=235 m/256 yd) held double (or single thread of Sandnes Double Sunday) 100 (100) 100 (100) 100 (150) 150 g / 2 (2) 2 (2) 2 (3) 3 balls. (Medium-size pompoms or ears are included in the yardage.) You can substitute with any single thread DK weight yarn OR fingering weight yarn held double, but remember to make a swatch and that the yardage can vary.

Needles and notions: 3 mm (US 2.5) and 3,5 mm (US 4) circular needles (40 cm) and DPNs. (Or size needed to obtain gauge.) If using magic loop technique, one at least 80 cm circular needle in both sizes will do.
10 stitch markers.

Gauge: 22 st/10 cm(4 in) in garter stitch on bigger needles (after blocking). Note that merino yarn tends to relax when blocked, so check the gauge from a blocked swatch!

Eino-kypärämyssy syntyi tarpeesta saada lapsilleni lämmin, suojaava ja istuva myssy. Kypärämyssy on kätevä asuste – erillisiä kaulaliinoja tai kaulureita ei tarvita. Joustavan ainaoikeinneuleen ja lyhennetyillä kerroksilla muotoiltavan rakenteen ansiosta myssy joustaa juuri oikeisiin suuntiin ja pysyy sopivana pitkään.

Kypärämyssy aloitetaan neulomalla tasona päälaki ja pään sivut, jotka muotoillaan tiimalasikantapään tapaan. Lyhennetyissä ja pidennetyissä kerroksissa käytetään German short row -tekniikkaa, eli kääntyessä ensimmäinen silmukka kiristetään kaksoissilmukaksi. Lakkiosaan voi halutessaan tehdä koristeeksi nostetuilla silmukoilla “saumat” keski- ja sivusilmukoiden väliin.

Lakkiosan ollessa valmis työ yhdistetään pyöröneuleeksi ja neulotaan kaulan joustin. Sen perään tehdään kauluriosa raglanlisäyksillä. Kasvojen ympärykseen on kaksi vaihtoehtoa: lippa tai joustin. Lippa päätellään islantilaisella päättelyllä, joka sopii kauniisti ainaoikeinneuleeseen ja on tavallista päättelyä joustavampi. Lopuksi voi vielä halutessaan lisätä tupsut. Samalla ohjeella voi siis tehdä monta erilaista myssyä!

Lanka: Sandnes Sunday (50 g=235 m) kaksinkertaisena, 100 (100) 100 (100) 100 (150) 150 g. (Keskikokoiset tupsut on laskettu mukaan menekkiin.) Vaihtoehtoisia lankoja: Novita Merino 4ply (50 g=230 m) kaksinkertaisena, Drops Merino Extra Fine (50 g=115 m) yksinkertaisena. Muutkin DK-vahvuiset langat käyvät (esim. Sandnes Double Sunday tai Merinoull), kuten myös fingering-vahvuiset langat tuplana (esim. Filcolana Arwetta).

Tarvikkeet: Pyöröpuikot (40 cm) ja sukkapuikot nro 3 ja 3,5. Jos käytät magic loop -tekniikkaa, et tarvitse sukkapuikkoja, yhdet pidemmät (80 cm) pyöröt riittävät. Silmukkamerkkejä 10 kpl. Mikäli et omista silmukkamerkkejä, myös hakaneulat tai lenkiksi solmitut langanpätkät sopivat oikein hyvin.

Koot: vastasyntynyt (0–3 kk) 3–6 kk (6–12 kk) 1–2 v (2–4 v) 4–7 v. Vastaa suunnilleen päänympärystä 33–36 (36–40) 40–44 (44–46) 48 (50) 52–54 cm.

Tiheys: 22 s/10 cm ainaoikeinneuletta puikoilla nro 3,5 (kastelun jälkeen). Huom! Merinolanka rentoutuu kastuessaan, joten ennen kastelua tiheys voi olla 1–2 s enemmän 10 cm:llä. Suosittelen tarkistamaan tiheyden kastellusta ja kuivatetusta mallitilkusta.
