• The mittens are knit completely and then the lace panel is knit separately and attached during finishing. The lace panel is ONLY on the top of the hand to prevent snagging.

• The thumb and gusset are shaped in a unique way that makes them extremely comfortable. They are very simple to create and afford a lot of mobility.

• The lace knits up quickly, it’s about the size of a swatch! Great if you’ve wanted to try learning Estonian lace, but never wanted to embark on a full shawl.

• The thick yarn and small needles make this a very dense knit. I wear these when I ride my bike and almost no wind gets through!

Size: The pattern as written will make 7” diameter mittens, and includes options for adjusting length in the cuff, hand and thumb.

Materials: Approximately 200 yards of sport or heavy fingering weight yarn for the mitten body. I recommend a wool or wool blend to help keep the cold out!

Approximately 50 yards of lace weight yarn. Perhaps some leftover yarn from a previous lace project to make a matching set?

(Additional length may require more yarn)

Needles:
Size 1 needles in preffered style for small diameter knitting
Size 4 needles for lace panel. I recommend a pointy needle for picking up nupps.

Skills Needed: It is expected that you have some experience with knitting in the round, decreasing and increasing, and reading a lace chart. The pattern has been well tested and should be suitable for most adventurous beginning knitters.

Einstein’s Theory of Relativity unified Space and Time into a single fabric called Spacetime. The surface of this fabric is warped and stretched by heavy objects like planets and stars, and it’s this warping that we feel as gravity.

The nupps in the lace are like heavy objects warping the unified fabric of Space and Time.
