Elara is a thick, cozy hat for adults, designed to be warm yet stylish. It has a thick, rich texture and features novel ‘jumbo stitches’, made up of several strands of yarn. These make the hat a really fun knit, especially for adventurous knitters who like to try new techniques.
This hat works best in a thick, fluffy, natural yarn to make the jumbo stitches stand out nicely.

Elara hat can be worn with the brim folded, to make a fitted beanie, or with the brim down, creating a more slouchy, relaxed feel.

A matching cowl is available here (buy both to get £2.00 off!).

Sizing
Elara can be made in adult small (54cm/21.25” head circumference) and adult large (61cm/24”).

Yarn
Elara is designed for aran weight yarns. It will look best in a natural, fluffy, thick yarn to make the jumbo stitches stand out nicely. The small size uses about 165 metres (190 yards), and the large size uses 180 metres (208 yards).

Needles
You will need 2 (sets of) needles: a smaller size for the cuff (suggested size is 4mm/US6) and a larger size for the body of the hat (suggested size 5mm/US8). If knitting with circulars, you may also want a set of DPNs in the larger size for the very top of the hat.

Gauge
Gauge is 19 stitches by 25 rows in 10 x 10 cm (or 4” x 4”). This is in the main pattern repeat, unstretched, and before making the jumbo stitches.

Extras
You will also need a large-ish crochet hook, cable needle, 8 or 9 small stitch holders, BOR marker and a tapestry needle.

Example hat
The prototype pictured is made in the adult small size, with aran weight yarn (cashmere/silk from Colourmart - sadly no longer available).
