a whimsical elfish hat with picot edge and lace holes. made for the 21st century gnome, i wanted this to have the comfort and ease of a casual beanie, with the fantasy and silliness of a magical being from a storybook. weave fun stuff through the lace holes! shown with a ribbon, but other possibilities include silk scarves, braids, chains, i-cord, flowers, yarn, or anything else you can think of.

yarn
you can use any worsted weight wool yarn for this pattern. i used “patons north america classic wool worsted”. more importantly, make sure you hit gauge and end up with a fabric that feels nice — not too loose, and not too tight.

needles
recommended needle size:
US 10, 6 mm

gauge
4” x 4” or 10 x 10 cm swatch: 20 st x 26 r, stockinette stitch

UPDATE (1/22/25): thank you for your patience and grace on this pattern ! it feels a little silly to say now that 12 years have passed since the last update. life took me away from knit and crochet there for a while but i’m happy to be back and making all the overdue corrections. honestly, i never thought many people would actually use my pattern, but you all proved me wrong. i’m happy to have an updated version now available, and i’ll keep it as a free download so all can continue to enjoy. if you try the new version, let me know how you like it and if there are still things that need to be clarified or changed in any way. thanks again and happy knitting !!

UPDATE (11/27/12): i am now finding all sorts of problems with the first half of the pattern, thanks to some very trusting knitters who have notified me with troubleshooting! please see the comments section for clarification on the picot edge; i will get a new pattern up as soon as possible! thanks so much for your interest and patience! <3
