Though I live in an arid, land-locked state, I’ve joked that a past life as a fisherman in Coastal Maine must account for my love of cables. For that reason, it was a treat to knit this lushly cabled poncho in a beautiful yarn from a Maine dyer, in a colorway inspired by the Atlantic. Though the fabric looks complex, the pattern is intuitive and enjoyable to knit. A button band closure adds additional interest to an already eye-catching piece.

This pattern contains both fully charted and written instructions.

Recommended Yarn:
String Theory Hand Dyed Yarns Merino DK, 6 skeins for either size — 100% Superwash Merino — 280 yds (256 m) per 113 g. Shown in AVERAGE size, in colorway Spring Tide.

For best results when using a hand-dyed yarn, alternate between skeins.

Average — Approximately 1,515 yards (1,385 m)
Tall — Approximately 1,680 yards (1,536 m)

Sizing:
Average— 21” (53 cm) by 63” (160 cm)
Tall — 22.75” (58 cm) by 67.5” (171 cm)
Size is adaptable — petite knitters may wish to knit 1-2 fewer repeats and omit the last buttonhole.

Gauge:
19.5 sts and 28 rows to 4” (10 cm) in stockinette st, after blocking and pinning.
27 sts and 30 rows to 4” (10 cm) in cable pattern, after blocking and pinning, centered over large cable motif.

PLEASE NOTE: Changes in gauge will affect finished size, look of motifs, and amount of yarn used. To meet these dimensions, be sure to use needle size that gives gauge.

Needles:
US 6 (4 mm) circular needle (or size that gives gauge).

Other Materials:
Nine 1” shankless buttons, fourteen stitch markers, cable needle in appropriate size, tapestry needle, sewing thread.
