Fall weather has hit, and I’m ready to put on warm clothes and toast marshmallows! Do you like to toast your marshmallow slowly in the embers, or do you set yours on fire? This little stranded colorwork beanie, in two versions and three sizes, is perfect for those beautiful mini skeins or stash busting. Enjoy playing with color dominance by knitting both versions!

Embers has one main color dominant, with that color forming the background and the other colors forming the pattern. Flames reverses the color dominance. Each version has a color chart and a high contrast chart which may be easier to read for visually impaired knitters or if printing in grayscale. To change sizes, work the pattern at a looser gauge using a thicker yarn.

Sizes: Adult S (M, L) Unstretched circumference: 17 (18, 19)” 43 (46, 49) cm Hat is stretchy! Consider choosing a size with about 1” (2.5 cm) negative ease, especially if using a yarn with less “memory” such as superwash wool.

Suggested Yarn weights: Adult S (M, L): DK/Light worsted wt (worsted wt, heavy worsted/aran wt)

Approximate yardage:
Embers: C1 120-150 yds, C2-C6 8-23 yards each (less yardage at looser gauges). C1 may require additional yardage if additional slouch is desired.
Flames: C1 32-45 yds, C2 83-88 yds, C3-C6 5-13 yds each (less yardage at looser gauges). C2 may require additional yardage if additional slouch is desired.

Gauge in stranded colorwork after washing and blocking (unstretched):
Adult S: 25 st and 32 rounds in 4 in (10 cm)
Adult M: 23 st and 30 rounds in 4 in (10 cm)
Adult L: 21 st and 28 rounds in 4 in (10 cm)

Suggested Needles:
Adult S (M, L)
US size 6 (7, 8) 4 (4.5, 5) mm 16” circular and dpn (or longer needle if using magic loop) for body of hat (or size
needed to obtain gauge in stranded colorwork). Some knitters go down a needle size for plain stockinette sections to
maintain consistent gauge. Dpn are only used for the crown, which is knitted in plain stockinette.
US size 4 (5, 6) 3.5 (3.75, 4) mm 16” circular for ribbing

Adult S samples knitted in Hikoo Kenzie. Adult M and L samples knitted in Malabrigo Rios and Manos Alegria Grande.
