Embroidered sweater
This design started as a project using the Knittable sweater pattern to create the perfect base garment for embroidery. I had found a beautiful flower motive in my grandmothers old sewing table and I really wanted to do it justice.
I chose the Eco Baby yarn from Isager for the perfect neutral background it creates, and by knitting it tighter than the yarn label suggested, it gave a great base for intricate embroidery.
It started out as a plain raglan sweater with a 5 stitch wide raglans knit in 1x1 rib, but once the yoke was finished the extra wide raglans sparked an idea. Instead of stopping the raglans cold-turkey, why not mirror the raglan on the bottom half? From there it was straightforward to carry on the freehand design, start a new triangle between the raglans on the sides of the sweater and finally adding the same triangle detail on the sleeves.
In this blog post I describe how you can create your own Embroidered Sweater, in words, images and charts. The blog is open and free, and you can use the Knittable 14 day free trial to create the base pattern and customize it to your liking (that includes adjustments for any size and any yarn). You can also take the blog instructions and apply them to any raglan sweater design, so take your favorite fit and sprinkle the design on top!
The directions cover the construction of the sweater in detail, but for different embroidery technique I recommend youtube or a local workshop. This was my first try at embroidery and it’s so much easier than I thought!
