EMERGENCY AFGHAN
Afghans make the perfect gifts because they can be used for so many occasions and don’t have to fit anyone. Sometimes an afghan emergency may arise where one is needed asap! This one fits the bill as it looks elaborate but is quite easy, can be made out of readily available yarn from local stores and it comes off the machine ready to wrap up. Finished afghan is about 42” wide and 66” long
YARN, GAUGE AND MACHINE: The sample is worsted yarn on a bulky machine with a ribber for the hems and a gauge of 2.6 stitches and 8.4 rows per inch. But the afghan can be made without a ribber by hand working the rib or substituting another hem. It can be made on the standard or mid-gauge by changing the yarn. Any gauge of machine may be used with ayarn that is an appropriate weight for it and will tuck nicely. Work across the entire bed and knit to the desired length. Instead of swatching for gauge, swatch for fabric that has a desirable texture and knits smoothly.
STITCH PATTERN: is atuck version of seed stitch. 6 edge stitches on each end knit stockinette all the time and are lifted every 12 rows to make the cabled look.
