Emma - Shetland Lace Half Hap Shawl
Hap (warm) shawls are traditionally made for warmth and daily use. They are heavier than a traditional lace Shetland shawl. Hap shawls are square in shape. Half Hap shawls are triangular. This lovely shawl features a lace center with an old shale border and a lace edging. The shawl pictured was knitted from handspun 100% Shetland wool yarn. This half hap shawl was knitted in the traditional way. The center is knit from the bottom up, starting with a single stitch. The center grows with each row that is knitted. Stitches are then picked up along the sides for the border. Once the border is knitted additional stitches are cast on for the edging.
The pattern includes instructions for a worsted weight version:
Measurements:
71” x 44” (wingspan x depth)
Yardage Used: Approximately 670 yards of a handspun Shetland and Shetland/Alpaca blend yarn ( 432 yds of light gray handspun Shetland – body of shawl and lace edging…….147 yds. Black handspun Shetland/Alpaca blend – Old Shale border……….90 yds. Brown handspun
Shetland/Alpaca blend – Old Shale border)
Needle Size: US size 9 (I chose to use a 40” circular needle)
…..a sample (or swatch) shawl:
Measurements: 27” wide x 15” deep (blocked)
Yardage Used: Approximately 300-350 yards of a fingering weight/sport weight handspun Shetland wool yarn. ** Note: This was knit as a sample (or swatch) shawl to see how the lace patterns all worked together. I used a few smaller skeins of handspun yarn so the yardage is a guestimate only. You may use more or less depending on the weight of the yarn and the needle size used. **
Needle Used: Size 5 (US) 16” circular
…and bonus instructions for a fingering weight version.
The pattern is 17 pages in length. Charts, written instructions, color photos, and helpful hints/tips are included.
