Here’s the trouble with feet. They are small. Okay, not my feet. I have big feet, but other people have small feet, and self-striping sock yarn is designed for feet. That often means the yarn has small stripes, and if you are knitting a cowl, small stripes can spell trouble. Small stripes are tricky to use in cowls because necks are larger than feet. Well, when your stripes are small, this is how you stretch a stripe. The Encompassing Cowl uses a nifty trick. By alternating between the self-striping yarn and a contrasting color every other round, the stripes from the self-striping yarn look wider. Suddenly, sock yarn with narrow stripes works perfectly for humans with necks larger than their feet. Ta-da! It’s magic.
