Ensilumi was inspired by feedback on my earlier design, Ruska, and offers a winter take on this unique and interesting sweater. Full-length sleeves, cosy cuffs and a folded collar make it a perfect winter piece! As the word ‘ruska’ comes from Finnish I wanted to find a Finnish name for this new version too. Ensilumi means the first snow or the first day of snow and perfectly describes this piece. Wear your Ruska in the Autumn and once the first snowfall comes, change to Ensilumi. The same cabled design, slightly different features and more warmth.

SIZES: 1 – 9 (see the schematics and table with measurements in the photos)

POSITIVE EASE: 6-8 cm/ 2.5-3.25”

The photo shows a size 2 worn with approx. 6 cm / 2.5“ of positive ease.

DIFFICULTY: Intermediate

YARN: You need 5 (5, 5, 6, 6), 7, 7, 8, 9 skeins of Ona from Mokoša (180 m / 100 g, Suffolk 95%, Wallachian 5%) or 730 (850, 900, 980, 1050), 1150, 1240, 1360, 1470) m / 800 (930, 990, 1070, 1150), 1260, 1360, 1490, 1610 yds of a similar yarn.

The sample is knitted with Ona from Mokoša in the colourway Natural White.

I recommend using a worsted weight yarn (preferably non-superwash and woolen spun) for this project. Alternatively, consider combining a lace-weight yarn like mohair with a sport or DK weight yarn. However, keep in mind that mohair’s fuzziness can overpower the cable pattern.

Please be aware that adjusting the length of the garment or the needle size you need to achieve the stated gauge will also affect the amount of yarn needed to finish the project.*

Needle A: 5 mm / US 8 circular needles with a cable of at least 80 cm / 32” and/or DPNs
Needle B: 4.5 mm / US 7 circular needles with a cable of at least 80 cm / 32” and/or DPNs
