Pattern Description from Cast On, August-October 2009:

The mittens and hat feature entrelac cuffs. The mittens have extra long cuffs which may be worn over or under a jacket sleeve for extra warmth. They may also be folded over. The cuff on the hat is worked first and the stitches for the hat are picked up on the wrong side of the work so that it folds over onto the hat. The entrelac technique used in this design varies from traditional entrelac in that it is worked in the round and the first stitch of each row is slipped. Slipping the first stitch makes the wrong side of the work more decorative where the stitches are picked up. This enables the wearer to fold the cuffs, if desired. The pattern assumes the knitter is using the ‘Magic Loop’ technique. Double pointed needles may be used instead. The entrelac hat is worked with size 7 needles. The mittens are worked with size 6 needles to make the fabric denser for warmth. Gauge is provided for both size needles. It is recommended that you read the Entrelac Lesson before beginning this project for an overview of the stitch type.
