Entrelac Stair Step Garter Stitch Shawl
RELEASE DATE: April 2006. This shawl was designed especially for Yarn Harbor, a yarn store located at 103 Mount Royal Shopping Circle in Duluth, Minnesota.
DESCRIPTION: This shallow triangular scarf/shawl is design in a garter stitch entrelac pattern, also called basketweave. It is worked from one side point to other. The border can be in the same or a contrasting same color. It is reversible, although not quite identical on each side when the edging is added. Tassels are optional.
SIZE: Approximately 60 inches (152 cm) wide and 18 inches (45 cm) deep, not counting the tassels. The sample shown in the picture is worn by a woman just shy of 5 feet tall.
SKILL REQUIRED: Intermediate – you must be able to follow complex instructions and work decreases and increases.
MATERIALS:
YARN: A DK or worsted weight yarn designed to knit at a gauge of 20 stitches/4 inches (10 cm).
Main color (MC) – about 500 yards. The model shown in the photo is worked with 1 500-yard skein of Lorna’s Laces “Fisherman”, a hand-painted yarn.
Contrast Color (CC) - 220 yards (205 m) for edging, 190 yards for tassels. The model in the photo is made with 100 gram (3.5 oz.) skeins of Brown Sheep’s Nature Spun – 1 skein without tassels, 2 skeins with tassels.
NEEDLES: Circulars needle in US Size 10 (6 mm) 36 inches (91 cm) or more long OR 2 shorter ones can work. You can use shorter needles for the body of the shawl, but you need the really long needle for the edging.
MISCELLANEOUS: darning needle, stitch holders (15 or more) (can be waste yarn or large safety pins), 24 small safety pins as markers, a book about 12 inches (30 cm) in circumference to use for tassel form.
GAUGE: Loose so it drapes well. Gauge is not critical. The sample shown is knitted at a gauge of 16 sts per 4 inches (10 cm).
