Erlkönig is a simple but dramatic shawl featuring three classic, contrasting stitch motifs, created by Joey Chow. Joey asked me to create a pattern from her notes, but because the size and some details of the original version were dictated by a limited amount of yarn she also requested I write a pattern for my own imagining of the shawl, unhindered by limitations. This pattern is the result - now in two sizes, with a lace edging added to the upper edge of the shawl, and some adjustments to the rate of decrease.

This triangular shawl is constructed from the bottom edge up, beginning with a simple strip of Victorian edging. Stitches are picked up on the long edge for a section of bird’s eye motif, then a solid garter stitch triangle with a center spine in which gradual side decreases shape the top edge. Finally the bead edging is knit onto the top edge.

The model in red was knit using a three-color gradient, but anything is possible: yarn amounts are given for each section separately, so that you can let your fantasy run wild.

Skill level: intermediate - some experience with lace knitting will be helpful.
Lace patterns are charted only.

The shawl requires approximately 800 meters of fine or heavy laceweight, or a light fingering. Gauge is irrelevant.

Suggested yarns: Miss Namibia mohair, 1-mile Merino
