Erte Cowl
Inspired by the flowing, sophisticated work of Art Deco designer Erte (born Romain de Tirtoff), this beaded cowl is begun by working an undulating lace border back and forth. The border is then joined into the round, and the rest of the mesh-lace cowl is picked up from this lower border. While beads are optional, they are a fun little sparkly addition to this project.
The project assumes some knowledge of chart reading, basic lace-knitting skills (yarn-overs and decreases), as well as knitting in the round. The project may be customized as to fit in both the length and circumference, although changes to the pattern as written will result in a change in the necessary yardage.
The original inspiration for this design came from a Harper’s Bazaar magazine cover featuring a woman wearing a red dress with multiple gold- beaded skirt layers leaping into the air.
