About this Design
Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898–1972) was a Dutch graphic artist inspired by mathematics. His work features mathematical objects and operations, including impossible objects, explorations of infinity, reflection, symmetry, perspective, truncated and stellated polyhedra, hyperbolic geometry, and tessellations. Early in his career, he drew inspiration from nature and studies of insects, landscapes, and plants, all of which he used as details in his artworks.
I have always been fascinated by M.C. Escher’s tessellations, particularly those that incorporate motifs from the plant world. This fascination inspired me to name my socks “Escher’s Blooms.” The floral lace pattern I selected for these socks is created using directional decreases combined with yarn overs and the occasional cable, all interspersed with sections of regular stocking and reverse stocking stitch. The resulting design is visually intriguing, with each four-petal flower borrowing elements from the other flowers to form its shape. The interlocking petals also create a beautiful geometric tessellation.
I have incorporated vertical symmetry into the socks by adding a decorative ribbing column that runs up the sides and flows seamlessly into the cuff. Additionally, the heel flap features a rib stitch that matches both the cuff and the decorative elements on the side seams. And of course, like many of my sock patterns, this one is toe-up with a German short-row heel and a nice deep gusset and heel flap.

To fit foot circumference:

Sadly, there is no small size. I couldn’t get the maths to work with this wide stitch pattern.
