“I gave Hope to the Dúnedain; I kept none for myself.”

Designed to fit close under an open collared coat, this cowl provides both practical and pretty protection from the elements. It has a warm, snuggly fitting ribbed turtle-neck which folds over on itself or can be pulled up high over the chin to cut bitter winds. The pretty lace shoulder piece can be worn either under an open coat or, by flipping the neck inward, can flow over top the shoulders of a high collared coat as a decorative but warm fichu.

Materials Needed:

  • @240-300 yards DK or light worsted weight yarn
  • 4mm (US size 6) circular needles, or needle size needed for gauge
  • Stitch marker to mark the beginning/end of the round
  • Waste yarn for provisional cast on
  • Optional: additional stitch markers to separate sections of the pattern

The instructions for this pattern are fully written and partially charted. The lace shoulder piece is charted, but written instructions are used for the ribbed turtleneck collar.

The stitch pattern used is a variation of a stitch designed by Naomi Parkhurst. Used with permission.

Pattern updated August 2019 to revise style sheet, add written instructions, and remaster the charts.
