This pattern uses the Estonian cast on. It is used for sock knitting, but when knitted in thick yarn, it just makes such a pretty edge.

This is an intermediate project only because of the cast on and bind off process. The cast-on is a little complicated at first, and I have included an online resource both for the Estonian cast on and the grafting finishing.
Both the hat and the cowl are knit in the round. The only special stitches are yarn over and knit 2 together.
