The Etched in Time Shawl features simple textured columns that repeat across the shawl to create a gorgeous finished accessory. It’s named for the way simple actions, when repeated consistently, can permanently change the face of the earth. You don’t need to change the world all at once - take things one stitch or action at a time, knowing that consistent repetition will result in permanent etchings.

The shawl uses two gradients worked back to back to create a gorgeous asymmetrical triangle. The pattern includes instructions for creating a shawlette with 400yds/100g or a shawl with 800yds/200g, but is designed to end on any row so you can use the entire gradient. The Etched in Time Shawl is fully reversible and the pattern includes notes for adjusting the textured columns so you can customize the placement and amount of columns. The stitches used make it an intermediate level pattern, but the project is mindless and intuitive to work up.

Sample details
The sample uses two 100g skeins of Llift Gradient Single from Llady Llama Fiber Co in the Verdigris colorway.

Yarn, Yardage, and Colors
The pattern uses fingering weight, but would look amazing in anything up to a chunky (or larger).
400yds/100g of fingering weight will net a shawl that measures 35”/89cm along the longest edge and 20”/51cm along the shortest edge. 800yds/200g of fingering weight will net a shawl that measures 50”/127.5cm along the longest edge and 29”/74cm along the shortest edge. Size can be customized by working extra/fewer repeats or by using a bigger yarn and hook.
The pattern is specifically designed to showcase the slow color changes of a gradient and to use up every scrap of yarn possible. It also looks amazing in self-striping yarns that offer larger blocks of each color, or in a tonal or solid. Variegated yarns will pool in this pattern, and the texture will be obscured by busy color changes.

Gauge
19 stitches and 11 rows = 4 inches in dc
Gauge is not essential to this pattern as a shawl that is slightly larger or smaller will still fit nicely, and the shawl can also be easily adjusted in length. Differences in gauge will change the finished size and will also impact the yardage required.
