Ethereal Socks
The socks of my dreams … quite literally this pattern came to me in my dreams. The Ethereal socks: delicate and light, in a way that seems to be not of this world.
Knit top down from cuff to toe, in two colours, using a two-stranded colourwork knitting technique, with a wedge toe and an afterthought heel, using Kitchener stitch to close the heel and toe. A ruffle is then added just below the cuff.
Pattern includes full written instructions for an afterthought heel (including my method on how to avoid those pesky gusset gaps holes) and grafting toes and heels closed using Kitchener stitch.
Sizes
Available in 3 sizes:
Adult Small, Medium and Large
Measurements
Circumference approximate 18cm/7 inches, 19cm/7.5 inches, 21cm/8.25 inches
Sizing
To determine the most appropriate sock size to knit, measure the circumference of your foot at the widest part. It is always best to have 1-3cm negative ease when knitting socks to ensure a close fit. My foot circumference is 23cm, so I knit the size Adult M.
Yarn
4ply/fingering weight sock yarn in 2 colours. Samples knit in BirdStreet yarn 4ply and Filcolana Arwetta Classic.
MC - BirdStreet yarn 4ply - “You Do Something To Me” (425m/100g)
CC - Filcolana Arwetta Classic - Off white (210m/50g)
1 x 100g skein of MC and 1 x 50g of CC is more than enough to make one pair of socks in any of the given sizes.
Yardage
MC approx. – 40, 45, 50g / 172, 194, 215m / 188, 212, 235 yards
CC approx. – 25, 35, 40g / 105, 147, 168m / 115, 161, 184 yards
If you require a longer sock than the given measurements, please allow for this in your yardage requirements.
Needles
2.25mm and 2.5mm, 23cm/9inch and 2.25mm and 2.5mm 100cm/40inch circular needles (or needles to obtain gauge).
Gauge
32sts x 41 rounds = 10x10cm / 4x4 inches in charted stockinette stitch in the round, blocked.
Notions
2 ring and 2 locking stitch markers, scissors, tapestry needle
Skills Used
Cast on, ribbing, stranded colourwork, ssk/k2tog decreasing, afterthought heel, kitchener stitch (full written instructions given), picking up stitches.
Full instructions given on how to get an accurate measurement for leg and foot length including the placement of the afterthought heel.
