Notes From the Designer:
•A gorgeeeeous shawl that is easier than it looks! The 5th in our series of Etude patterns, this beauty can be dressed up or down and is sure to become a wardrobe staple!
•A simple garter stitch pattern is glamorized with the addition of a knitted-on cabled border. The cable pattern is quickly memorized and is easy enough for new cable knitters, while also entertaining experienced knitters.
•Knit sideways from end to end, this is a great travel project that doesn’t require a long needle to work hundreds of stitches on the final rows.
•All shaping is worked within the garter stitch body to keep the cable pattern intact.
•While working on this pattern, I listened to a vinyl recording of Disney’s “Fantasia,” which I bought years ago at a secondhand shop. I loved watching and rewatching the video when I was a kid, and I still enjoy most of the musical selections from it. I listen to that old vinyl a lot when knitting, or just sampling new ideas. For a fun pattern like this, try listening to “Dance of the Hours,” by Amilcare Ponchielli. Like with the Pastoral Symphony, I can vividly picture the cartoon that accompanied this piece in the film every time I hear it, and I still think fondly of the dancing hippos, which were my favorite part as a child.
