Evanescence Sweater
Vertical stripes of different colors dissolve in each other as if diluted by the gentle fog, making Evanescence Sweater look ephemeral and cozy at the same time.
Straight silhouette with gently shaped shoulders and sleeve caps combined with a generous amount of positive ease creates a pullover that is incredibly comfortable to wear. The body of the sweater is knit sideways with the built-in bottom hem and has extra structure due to the three needle bind offs used as seams along the sides.
This piece can be worked in any number of colors and is perfect for using up leftover yarn or mini skeins. It will look especially good if one main color is used to dissolve others, creating a unique palette for your sweater.

Needles and Gauge
- Swatch to determine your needle size that helps to fit the gauge of 19sts and 28 rows in 4” / 10cm in Stockinette Stitch, blocked; needle size below is a suggestion
- US 8 / 5mm for the body and sleeves
- US 7 / 4.5mm for the ribbing
- Body: long single points or circular needles on 32” / 80cm cable
- Sleeves: circular needles for the magic loop method, small circumference circular needles or a set of dpns
Construction
- The front and back are worked separately flat in a similar manner. Increases shape the first shoulder. Sets of decreases and increases create the neckline. The second shoulder is shaped with symmetrical decreases. 2x1 ribbing is worked along the hem to prevent stockinette from rolling.
- Once both pieces of the body are completed, the shoulders are seamed and the sides are joined with the three needle bind offs with the stitches at the future arm openings reserved.
- Short rows shape small sleeve caps. Sleeves are worked straight in the round. The folded cuff is worked in 2x1 rib.
- The neckline stitches are picked up and the folded ribbed neck band finishes off the neck opening.
- The sweater is knit as a sequence of stripes in 5 colors: A (held double), B (held double), C (held double), A+B (1 strand each), A+C (1 strand each). The number and width of the stripes is completely adjustable. The full sample sequence is provided on the last page of the pattern. Feel free to use it or work the stripes of any width in any other order.
