The Everyday Backpack is perfect for carrying the small items you need with you all the time, and the pattern is:

• Easy, also suitable for beginners.
• Fast, with two strands of cotton cord held together.
• Fun, the different parts and details are fun to make, and it’s fun to see how it works up so quickly.
• Almost no seaming.
• Comfortable, the wide straps make it comfortable to wear.

To make this backpack you will need some sort of cotton cord (2 mm thick), e.g. Macramé cotton cord. This results in a beautiful, sturdy backpack. This project works up quickly, but remember to take breaks, because the cotton cord is stiffer than your average yarn. I recommend working for short periods only.

This backpack can be made with a variety of yarn. You could use other types of yarn than cotton cord (that match the gauge), but many types would not offer the same sturdiness to your backpack. The positive side with some other types of yarn is that they may result in a less heavy backpack. One option that works well is T-shirt yarn.

When following the instructions in the pattern the “walls” of the backpack should be about 26 - 27 cm long, and when wearing the bottom pull a bit down. So the final backpack will be about 30 cm long. If you want your backpack longer, you can make the walls longer; if so you will need more cord.

To make the Everyday Backpack you will need:

Approx. 800m of 2mm cotton cord. We will work with 2 strands held together (approx. 800m is the total amount of cord needed for both strands, it is approx. 400m per strand). Cotton cord can be bought in many beautiful colors on e.g. amazon.

(Different cotton cords act very differently. The meterage estimate given here is based on the amount used by all the talented crocheters who so kindly tested this pattern. I used in total 520m of cord on my backpack, but you will need more cord if you need longer straps or want a longer pocket, and also the type of cotton cord may impact the amount needed. That’s why I recommend buying approx. 800m of cord.)

Crochet hook 6 mm (or the one that gives you the right gauge), and 4 mm for the pocket inside.
