The Extra-Long Celtic Cable Saxon Braid Blanket is a mixed pattern of cables of different sizes with a centre pattern of a repeating Saxon braid. The Saxon braid is a common feature and centrepiece of Irish knitting. This pattern is a re-interpretation of my Chunky Celtic Cable Saxon Braid Blanket pattern in a larger size.

This blanket’s extra length is perfect as a throw blanket for someone over 6 feet, or as a coverlet for a twin-size bed, or to lay on top of an existing comforter (NOTE: This blanket will cover the surface of a U.S. standard twin-size bed, with a few inches over the side, but is not large enough to cover twin-size sheets).

SKILL LEVEL: Intermediate.

SUGGESTED MATERIALS: 15 balls of Alize Puffy yarn (3.53oz, 100g) (Image shown is the colour ‘27’.

SUGGESTED TOOLS: No needles required (finger knitting). Scissors.

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Approx. 46” x 80” (117 cm x 203 cm).

PLEASE NOTE: This pattern will work with any brand of loop yarn, but keep in mind that the size of the loops, and size of the balls/skeins of each brand is different.

Bernat Alize Blanket-EZ can be substituted and the blanket will be the same size, but you will need fewer skeins of yarn. Lion Brand Off-The-Hook, Lion Brand Crayola Off-The-Hook, and Red Heart Loop-It yarns can all be used with this pattern, but will yield a blanket with smaller overall dimensions. You will also need more balls/skeins to complete the pattern as is.
