Merry the Snowman was one of my first designs, initially published back in 2016. I made a couple of large size versions for craft fairs and people loved them for Christmas and winter decor, so I finally got around to publishing a pattern so others could make one!

This up-sized member of the snowfolk clan is made from super-soft blanket yarn but constructed in a way that ensures he can stand upright, unsupported. Merry measures about 14 inches tall (excluding pom pom)!

To complete this pattern, you’ll need:

  • Super Bulky yarn in 3 colours. I used less than one skein of Bernat Blanket Sparkle in White Sparkle as the main colour for the body, which gives a perfect frosty-looking snow effect.
  • Worsted weight acrylic yarn in white and two colours similar to the super bulky yarn used for the scarf and hat
  • Size K (6.5mm) sturdy crochet hook
  • 15mm black safety eyes
  • Two buttons or beads and a needle threader
  • Large pom pom maker
  • Polyester or other filling. I used about half a 20oz bag of polyester stuffing
  • Yarn needle
  • Locking stitch markers

This pattern is predominantly single crochet but there is one round of shallow back post half double crochet. Merry is worked in the round and seamless, made from continuous rounds starting from the bottom and working upwards. Creating tight fabric from fluffy blanket yarn can be a challenge, so I would recommend this project be tackled by intermediate or experienced crocheters only.
