What a peach! This knitting pattern is for a matinee jacket in double knitting yarn that is is not only packed with vintage style, but it’s also very quick to make.

The jacket is worked on 4.5 mm and 5 mm needles so knits up very quickly. All edgings are worked in moss stitch whilst the jacket’s full skirt has a very easy diamond and eyelet pattern worked over a 16 row pattern repeat. The sleeves are in stocking stitch with a moss stitch cuff.

Most knitters will confess to having a pile of projects waiting to be made up because they’d rather be knitting than sewing! The body of this matinee jacket is worked in one piece to the armholes, so no joining side seams. The button and buttonhole bands are knitted as part of the body, whilst the unusual square neckline is incorporated into the backs and front. This means, there’s no need to knit collars and edgings separately and sew them on later.

The pattern produces a garment with the following measurements
Actual chest 51 cms
Underarm to hem 19cms
Sleeve seam 14 cms
Length (back of neck to hem) 28cms

Although the pictured matinee coat is worked in a peach yarn, try using white for a special christening outfit, or red for a cosy winter coat.

A separate pattern is available in the British High Sewciety Etsy shop for the knitted display mannequin shown in the photographs.
