This project is suitable for beginners. The size is easy to adapt to any age, gender and body type.

Recommended yarn

This project works well with sport-weight yarn that is not elastic. Plant-based yarns such as cotton or bamboo are the most suitable.

The poncho in the photo is a women’s size Small, worked on 60 stitches. I used DROPS Loves You 9, which is a sport-weight, 5-ply cotton yarn. I needed about 525 metres (575 yards) for the whole poncho (including crochet edge).

Needles

• Knitting needles size 3mm (US 3 / UK 11).
  Single point (straight) needles 30 cm (12 inches) or 35 cm (14 inches) long, or circular needles from 40 cm (16 inches) to 80 cm (32 inches) long.
• (Optional) crochet needle size 3mm (US C / UK 11); this is to make the edges neater.
• Tapestry needle to bind off (optional)

Gauge: 19 stitches = 10 cm (4 inches). Check your gauge by knitting a swatch of 30 stitches and 20-30 rows.

Size

The pattern includes instructions to calculate the number of stitches needed based on the desired size and your gauge. I included cast-on instructions for 10 sizes (from toddler to Men’s Large) but you can make it as customized as you want.

Toddlers (2 years): 285 metres (310 yards)
Children (6 years): 390 metres (425 yards)
Children (10 years): 450 metres (495 yards)
Teens (14 years): 515 metres (565 yards)
Women (Small): 580 metres (635 yards)
Women (Medium): 730 metres (800 yards)
Women (Large): 865 metres (945 yards)
Men (Small): 865 metres (945 yards)
Men (Medium): 1010 metres (1105 yards)
Men (Large): 1340 metres (1465 yards)
