Gauge varies with specific yarn and felting time and is not critical for this project Finished bag as knitted on the standard gauge machine is about 11.5” wide x 8” high x 2” across bottom, excluding casing. This is the largest size that can be knitted on a standard machine. Passap bag is a little smaller due to needle count. Mid-gauge and bulky machines will achieve similar bags to the sample with the numbers given in the pattern but can knit larger bags. Mid-gauge machines can achieve a bag about 16” wide, bulkies can achieve about 18” by increasing stitch count to the full needle bed. Increasing row count makes a taller bag .

Yarn: bulky machine use worsted weight yarn. All other machines use sport weight. Yarn must be 100% wool that is not Superwash . Good yarn choices include: Patons Classic Worsted, Brown Sheep, Jaggerspun, Botanica by Halcyon. All of these felted dependably and evenly. Different colors may felt at different rates. This is true of all yarns. If using an unknown wool, save disappointment by knitting and felting a test swatch to be sure the results are pleasing.
