Fair Isle Cozy
I wanted a fairly easy fair isle pattern to teach beginners in this technique and to be able to complete a project in an afternoon (well, almost).
It’s an easy design to follow, using only 2 colors per round, with one round using 3. The chart is simple to follow, using colors rather than symbols. Any 4 colors of your choice can be substituted, I have given a couple of examples on photos.
You will need to know how to knit in the round to knit this cozy. It is about 4” tall and will fit a water bottle(as shown) or a coffee cup.
You could add extra rows of ribbing or stockinette if you wanted something taller. Gauge is approximate.
The MC needs about 25 yds and less than 10 yds of 3 other colors- you may want to allow a little extra in case of mistakes.
As you can see from the chart, only one color is used in each “section”, so you can cut each color when finished with it instead of carrying it up the inside of your work.
The important thing to remember is to leave enough slack when carrying the yarns along the inside as you change colors. If you don’t do this, it will look puckered when finished and stretched around your bottle.
When I carry my yarns, I give the carried one a little stretch before I begin knitting with it- it looks a bit loose but you need that extra bit when you go to actually use it. Also, if you are carrying yarn more than 4-5 sts, twist them so the float is not too long.
This is my first Fair Isle design…not quite perfectly lined up but you have to look close to see that….and I’m offering this one to you for Free!
So, give it a try and post your pics please.
