These mittens are knitted in the round using the Fair Isle technique - a traditional method of knitting from Fair Isle, a tiny island that is part of the Shetland Islands in Scotland. In Fair Isle knitting you use two colours for each round to form the pattern. This produces a thick, warm fabric.

There are two variations - a multicoloured version that uses seven different colours, and a simpler two colour version.

The mittens will fit an average woman’s hand. The mitten is 8 inches (20 cm) around and 10 inches (25 cm) long including the cuffs which are 2.5 in (6 cm) long.

The pattern includes complete instructions and charts.

This knitting pattern is suitable for experienced or adventurous intermediate knitters.

Suggested yarns are Jamieson & Smith 2 ply jumper weight or Knit Picks Palette. For the multicoloured version you will need two 25 g balls of the main colour plus one 25 g ball of each of the other six colours. For the two coloured version you will need two 25 g balls of each colour.
