Inspired by the profusion of fungi and the amazing range of textures, shapes and colours it inhabits as it decorates the woodlands, I sought to mimic some of these in crochet stitches to enhance garments or accessories. I chose to focus on edible mushrooms. The ribbing texture with bobbles drew on the long stems and crowded heads of enoki and the hem lace on the scallop shapes of oyster mushrooms. The ruffle was inspired by the shapes of chanterelles and the stripes of the yoke by the gills on the underside of shitake mushrooms.
The variety of stitches ensure this is a really enjoyable project to work and the customisable sizing makes it really comfortable to wear too.
Sizes: 40cm/16”-48cm/19” neck circumference, intended for wear with wearer’s preferred positive ease in mind
Tension: 19 sts x 22 rows = 10cm x 10cm / 4” x 4” measured over ribbed neck band using 3.5 mm hook
Working method: The neck ribbing, bobbles and frill are worked from top down in the round. The yoke is worked separately, sideways around the neck, and seamed to the neck ribbing
Finished measurements
a. Neck circumference: 40 (43, 45.5, 48)cm / 16 (17, 18, 19)”
