NOTE - this 2017 pattern has been completely redesigned (Feb 2019) with different construction method, different shape, and a double knitted crown with centered double decreases instead of separate single knitting and leaning decreases (as in this older pattern). For that reason i do not consider them similar enough to combine as one design. The only similarity is the colourwork motif. Ravelry Editors - please do not merge them - thank you.

Inspired by the power and simplicity of the Christian message, the minimalist Cross motif is placed centrally and defined only by negative-space panels either side. The Cross becomes a symbolic bridge between above and below as it stands out vividly against the sky.

If using conventional single-layer knitting, a colourwork motif like this can be knitted as intarsia but it requires some fiddling about to make it work for in-the-round knitting. With double knitting, the yarn you need is always right there, so changing colour is a totally painless and fuss-free process. And there is the added benefit of ending up with two different wardrobe options for your efforts… identical motifs but colours reversed when turned inside out. The hat is also particularly warm, because it is twice as thick as a regular knitted beanie.

Designed for 8ply DK weight it can also be knit in 10ply worsted, but will create a larger hat. Sample is knit in Madelinetosh DK Twist.
