There is an error in chart 1.
Row 2: Chart shows -M- for all 8 stitches, but the directions incorrectly say k1, m1. You should M 8 times.
Rows 6 and above show 1 too many stitches. (The row above a M should have 1 more than the M row)
Stop at row 17, otherwise you have too many stitches.
