NEEDLES: US size 8 (5.0 mm) DPNs or small circumference circulars, plus 24” and 32” circular needles, or size needed to make gauge.

US size 7 (4.5 mm) DPNs or small circumference circulars, plus 32” circular, or one needle size smaller than size used to make gauge.

Intermediate - This pattern is for those who feel comfortable with colorwork and have made a few projects, using various skills and techniques.

Notes From the Designer:

—Sweater weather is coming! Make this two-color, top-down pullover your new winter favorite. The colorwork section is easy but engaging, and the body and sleeves knit up quickly in worsted weight yarn, so you’ll be ready for that early season snowstorm when everyone else gets caught off guard.

—Pattern includes three charts, but here’s a fun surprise: they’re interchangeable! You can knit the pattern as written, or switch the chart order as you please.

—This pattern does not include neck shaping. The large, ribbed neckline is worked as you go on the same size needle as the main body (instead of knitting the neck ribbing on a smaller size needle). The idea is to create a neckline that can be worn on or off the shoulder; it looks cute both ways!

—If you are new to colorwork, or tend to be a tight knitter, you might want to consider changing to a larger needle size just for the colorwork section, to maintain the correct gauge. Make sure to knit a gauge swatch before beginning your project.

—If working with multiple skeins of hand-dyed yarn, make sure to alternate skeins every couple of rounds to avoid color pooling or striping.

—This pattern was inspired by an early Lisa Loeb song called “When All the Stars Were Falling.” It’s one of my favorites from her first album because the lyrics are so descriptive. I love the idea of trying to catch a falling star. The different chart patterns in the yoke are meant to emulate stars as they fall closer and closer to Earth (and get bigger as they come near). I’m not sure if I really managed to achieve that, but I hope you enjoy knitting this sweater and listening to some mid-90’s folk/rock. Maybe wearing this sweater will help you catch your own falling star (or at least avoid getting hit by one).
