Farm Animals in a Barn
This pattern is for the opening barn, the horse, cow, pig, sheep, hen & nest, as well as the hay bales, hay net and food troughs!
Please be aware that the barn is large (measurements are given below) and so this is a fairly time-consuming project! The pattern contains lots of photos to help you every step of the way. It is written in English, using American crochet terms. All of my patterns have been independently tested prior to publication.
You will need:
Yarn of your choice. Yarn weight doesn’t really matter - the size of your project will simply turn out bigger or smaller! I used aran weight yarn for my project (equivalent to light worsted weight / weight 3) and my finished barn measures approximately 26cm wide, 20cm deep and 23cm tall (not including the carry handle). Please ensure that you use the same weight yarn to make both your barn and the animals to ensure that they will fit.
For the farm animals (pages 4 - 15), you will need the following colours:
Pig
- Main colour - I used pink (approx. 9m per pig).
Horse
- Main colour - I used gold (approx. 18m per horse).
- Mane / Tail colour - I used beige (approx. 4m per horse).
Cow
- Main colour - I used white (approx. 12.5m per cow).
- Nose / Udders colour - I used pink (approx. 2m per cow).
- Head / Patches colour - I used black (approx. 3m per cow).
Sheep
- Body Colour - I used cream (approx. 6.5m per sheep).
- Head / legs colour - I used dark grey (approx. 3m per sheep).
Hen
- Main colour - I used gold (approx. 5m per hen).
- Comb colour - I used red (approx. 1m per hen).
- Nest colour - I used dark brown (approx. 3m per nest).
Accessories
- Trough Colour - I used light grey (approx. 3m per trough).
- Hay Colour - I used light brown (approx. 7m per hay bale & 3m per hay net).
For the barn & accessories (pages 16 - 32), you will need the following colours:
- Base / Upper Floor / Ladder Colour - I used beige (approx. 302m).
- Main Walls / Doors Colour - I used red (approx. 310m).
- Roof / Optional Carry Handle Colour - I used dark grey (approx. 297m).
- Edges / Window & Door Frame / Fence Colour - I used white (approx. 70m).
- Grass Colour - I used green (approx. 43m).
- Muddy Puddle Colour - I used dark brown (approx. 5m).
Please note - The amount of yarn used will vary according to yarn weight, hook size and stitch tension so these measurements are only a rough guide. The pattern refers to the colours that I used, however these can be substituted for colours of your choice.
You will also need:
- A suitable size hook for the yarn you have chosen - I used a 4mm hook.
- Pairs of 6mm black safety eyes for each pig and cow you intend to make.
- Some toy stuffing.
- Small amounts of black and pale yellow finer yarn or thread for adding the facial details.
- 2 buttons for fastening the barn closed (this is optional). Mine were 17mm in diameter.
- 1 small button for hanging the horse’s hay net (this is optional).
- ‘7 count’ plastic canvas. I had a 26cm x 33cm sheet (that’s 10.25 x 13.5 inches) & I used just over 4.5 sheets (this includes placing 2 layers of plastic into the end wall with the door to provide extra strength). A higher count (that’s the number of holes per inch) will mean the plastic is more bendy so stick to 7 count if possible. If your plastic feels very bendy (I’ve found the cheaper plastic sheets sourced from amazon tend to be very flexible), you may wish to insert multiple layers of plastic into the wall and floor panels (not the roof) to make your barn stronger.
- Other tools you will need are a tapestry needle, some scissors and some stitch markers.
You are welcome to sell the items that you make using this pattern, but please do not sell / share the pattern itself.
Thank you
