Faroese Shawl
Faroese shawls originate from a group of islands in the North Atlantic. These islands were named by ancient Norwegian sailors for the “fairies” they believed lived on them. Faroese shawls are known for their light weight and for the shaping that helps them cling to your shoulders. There are two side panels with a center gusset. There are also both vertical and horizontal borders. A bit of lace and beads add a feminine air to a shape that has been typically utilitarian.
This shawl is knit from the bottom up. It is worked largely in garter stitch with lace panel accents at the bottom and up the center. Decreases are worked at the borders and center panel with special decreases in the shoulder area. These shoulder decreases shape the shawl to rest on your shoulders without being tied or pinned.
Optional beads may be added to the lace using the crochet hook method. If you choose this option, you will need approximately 80 size 6/0 beads.
