The Fascina Cowl was inspired by Barbara Walker’s Fascine Braid slip stitch from her Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns.
I found the stitch pattern so compelling (it reminded me of ice crystals) that I had to use it. Every pattern I’ve designed to date has been reversible, but this stitch demanded that I veer off course.

The 4 row stitch pattern is simple and quite intuitive. Working 8 rows will have you completely at ease.
The cowl is worked in the round and cast off with an applied border, the same concept as is used on Pi Shawls. You add a border and bind off the last row simultaneously. The provisional cast-on is removed and the applied border worked there as well.

A needle a little smaller than the ball band recommendation is used to ensure the cowl is firm enough to stand up around the neck. A gauge swatch is likely not necessary unless you are a very loose knitter.

Just under 200 yards of worsted or light worsted weight yarn are required.
One size is shown but increasing and decreasing the circumference and height of the cowl are easy by altering the number of cast-on stitches and the number of row repeats.
