Fast Forward Beaded Beanie
Fast Forward Beaded Beanie complements FFB Mitts and FFB Mittens. It shares the same design elements and interesting knitting techniques, such as short rows, intarsia and beading. The beanie can be made with or without beads. Fasten your seatbelt, accelerate, and go on a Fast Forward knit!
CONSTRUCTION
This is a sideways design. The beanie is constructed of six short-row panels, knitted clockwise around its axis. The first and last panels are seamed together(grafted).
TECHNIQUES
➰ short rows
➰ intarsia
➰ knitting
➰ grafting with WY tabs
SIZING & GAUGE
Three sizes S, (M, L)
Select your size depending on your gauge and head circumference. The finished hat circumference should have about 3in (7.5cm) negative ease.
Your gauge may vary between 27-33 sts x 55-65 rows, but the fabric should be fairly dense to prevent over stretching.
BEANIE MEASUREMENTS
made at gauge 30 sts x 60 rows = 4in (10cm) in garter stitch
Circumference
S - 17.3in (44cm)
M - 18.9in (48cm)
L - 20.5in (52cm)
Height
S - 7.9in (20cm)
M - 8.7in (22cm)
L - 8.7in (24cm)
YARN
Fingering or sport weight yarn 186 yds (170m) / 50g in two colours.
You will need approx (C1) 60g, (C2) 10g + approx. 10g for 2in (5cm) pompom.
BEADS
255, (285, 315) seed beads in size 8, (3 mm outside diameter or 8 beads per inch).
Make sure the beads have a hole large enough to be threaded onto your yarn.
TOOLS & NOTIONS
➰ pair US 0 / 2mm 32in / 80cm circular needles
➰ long beading needle & sewing thread
➰ blunt tapestry needle
➰ two stitch markers
➰ waste yarn in contrasting colour
WASTE YARN
Waste yarn is used for a few provisional rows at the beginning and end of your knitting. It is removed after grafting. To ease WY removal, the weight should be similar to your main yarn or thinner. A contrasting colour will help you when grafting.
PATTERN
➰ written and charted for three sizes
➰ tested and tech edited
VIDEOS
All techniques used in the pattern are demonstrated in video tutorials. Please watch the videos in full before starting your project. It is also a good idea to try out the colour blocking and beading techniques on a small swatch first.
