Fat Tuesday
The inspiration for this shawl design originally came from a guitar that my husband, Paul, built with the same name. It featured the bold colors of Mardi Gras in New Orleans and was loosely based on the “Music Rising” guitars that were built after hurricane Katrina, in hopes of helping struggling musicians in the area after the flooding.
The color and movement that Paul was able to achieve in the finished piece made me want to cast on for the Fat Tuesday Shawl!
Mosaic knitting, 2 color Brioche and a waving Vine Lace are all featured in the simple asymmetrical triangle construction of the shawl to bring out the Mardi Gras theme. Gold Fleur-de-Lys peek out from a variegated green/purple background in the classic color combo of the biggest party in the American South. The Vine Lace pattern makes me think of the old-growth gardens in the middle of the city and the Honeycomb section in the middle of the Brioche reminds me of the elegant wrought iron gates and trellises that are all over the French Quarter!
