Fathom Five Grotto Hat
Along the Bruce Peninsula Trail leading to Tobermory and Fathom Five National Marine Park, the remains of an ancient sea may be seen by the impressions it left on the landscape. Most striking are the dolomite grottos, deep domed caverns carved by the actions of waters that receded long ago. The slowly swirling textured rib of this hat is reminiscent of the swirling currents that cut these grottos out of the cliff face.
The pattern calls for light fingering weight yarn; regular fingering weight yarn may be used instead, but the fabric will be denser and fit may be affected. The finished, blocked beret will be generous and drapey, and is suitable for soft single-spun yarns and silk blends.
One size is given; the pictured beret fits from a medium to a large hat size. There are suggestions in the pattern for fitting a small size.
Gauge is given for both the blocked and preblocked ribbing in the pattern; remember to include the hidden purl stitches in your stitch count when checking gauge before blocking!
Materials:
•circular and/or double pointed needles in the size required to meet gauge, suitable for working a small diameter project
•one stitch marker to mark the start/end of rounds
•optional: 8 additional stitch markers to mark repeats
The hat is worked in the round, from the bottom to the top, narrowing as it is worked until 9 stitches remain.
