Beneath the blue waters of Fathom Five National Marine Park lies the silent remains of over 20 wrecked ships. This cowl pattern is inspired by the rippling shoreline waves and silently swirling currents that will rise in a moment’s furious storm to waylay unsuspecting ship’s captains and drive their vessels into the unforgiving rocky islands north of Tobermory. Old shale lace at the top and bottom of the cowl represent the shorelines of the islands, while the textured ribbing slowly swirls up the body of the cowl.

The pattern calls for light fingering weight yarn; regular fingering weight yarn may be used instead, but the fabric will be denser and more yardage will be required. The finished, blocked cowl will be generous and drapey, and is suitable for soft single-spun yarns and silk blends.

Gauge is given for both the blocked and preblocked ribbing in the pattern; remember to include the hidden purl stitches in your stitch count when checking gauge before blocking!

Materials:

• circular needles in the size required to meet gauge, long enough to comfortably fit 288 sts
• one stitch marker to mark the start/end of rounds
• optional: 15 additional stitch markers to mark repeats
• optional: an additional shorter circular needle in the same size, if magic loop or travelling loop are not preferred methods of managing a smaller circumference

The cowl is worked in the round, from the bottom to the top, narrowing slowly as it is worked.
