New Zealand sits on a long jagged fault line that stirs every now and again, shaking the islands and creating large rifts and tears in the seafloor and on land. This shawl was designed after the earthquake that devastated Kaikoura. The contrast coloured stitches roughly track the long fault line that cuts through New Zealand.

To avoid the curling edge that is inevitable with long stretches of stocking stitch, a narrow band of ribbing is worked up each side of the wrap. This pulls each side in neatly without curling and without interrupting the look of the stocking stitch.

This pattern is part of The New Zealand Collection which is available as an ebook comprising 20 patterns (some for women, some for men and some for children).
