Faux Fur Pom Pom Basket
If this basket was a person, she’d be loads of fun with a touch of glam! The faux fur trim gives the blush-colored basket charm, while the pom poms bring an element of excitement. The
feminine aesthetic will inject style into any space, whether holding makeup brushes on a vanity or containing office supplies on a desk or in a craft room.
This basket shows you can add embellishments like fur trim without a sewing machine or glue. It is crocheted on with slip stitches and faux fur yarn. The pom poms are not, in fact, actual pom poms, but are created with a crochet hook and yarn through the surface crochet technique. The result is a unique and cute crochet basket unlike any other. Life is too short to be boring!

Pattern Notes:
- It is important to follow the gauge; if your gauge is larger than what is listed below, go down a crochet hook size and try to match the gauge again. I crocheted tightly with an N hook to give the basket a sturdy shape.
- The trim and pom poms use surface crochet, with the pom poms requiring two additional steps. Trim instructions are in the pattern and pom pom instructions are detailed here. See the video “How to Make Pompoms with a Crochet Hook and Faux Fur Yarn” on my YouTube channel – Nicki Byrnes Crochet.
- To make the faux fur pom poms, cut a length of faux fur yarn 64” long and follow these steps:
- Insert your hook into any space between stitches from the front of your work to the inside of the basket.
- Holding the faux fur yarn inside the basket, pull up a loop by wrapping the yarn over the tip of your hook (yarn over) and bringing the hook back through the front of your work. The hook with one loop will be at the front of your basket.
- Insert your hook into the next space to the left.
- Yarn over and pull up a loop.
- You will have two loops on your hook. Pull the loop closest to the hook tip through the stitch closest to the crochet handle (slip stitch). Use your hands if it makes it easier.
- Pull the yarn all the way through that loop and the space so the end of your tail is now on the outside of your basket.
- Using your crochet hook, pull the yarn end back through the stitch or an adjacent one so that end of your tail is now on the inside of your basket.
- This tail can now be used for the next pom pom. I like to alternate the pom poms up and down, about 1” (or about 4 stitches) apart.
- Choose a space for the next pom pom and repeat steps 1-8 for each pom pom.
- Tie the end tail to the beginning tail on the inside and knot twice; cut tails as short as possible.
Pattern:
With Re-Spun yarn, start by making a magic circle or CH 3 and SL ST to the first CH to make a loop
RND 1: Work 8 SC into ring, SL ST to the first SC and pull tight (8)
RND 2: CH 1, 2 SC in each ST around, SL ST to first ST (16)
RND 3: CH 1, (2 HDC, HDC) REP 7 times, SL ST to the top of the first ST to join (24)
RND 4: CH 1, (2HDC, HDC, HDC) REP 7 times, SL ST to the top of the first ST to join (32)
RND 5: CH 1, SC into 3rd loop of each ST, SL ST into the top of the first ST to join (32)
RND 6: CH 1, HDC in each ST around. SL ST to first ST (32)
RNDS 7-13: REP RND 6 (32)
Tie off and weave in ends.
Bottom Trim:
With faux fur yarn, join at end of RND 5 between two stitches. SL ST loosely at the bottom of every other ST from RND 6 all the way around. SL ST to first ST and tie off. Pull yarn end through to inside of basket and weave in end. (16)
Top Trim:
RND 1: With faux fur yarn, join at end of RND 13 between two stitches. SL ST loosely between every other ST from RND 13 all the way around. SL ST to first ST and tie off. Pull yarn end through to inside of basket and weave in end. (16)
Pom Poms:
With faux fur yarn, identify where you would like your first pom pom to go. They should be arranged sporadically. I recommend 10 pom poms spaced ~1” (or about 4 stitches) apart, alternating up and down, but not in perfect rows.
To make pom poms, see Pattern Notes above or abridged version here:
Cut faux fur yarn 64” long. Hold faux fur yarn inside basket and insert crochet hook between the stitches where you’d like your pom pom to go. Yarn over and pull up a loop, leaving it on your hook. Insert hook into stitch to the left, yarn over, and pull back through the space and the loop on your hook. Pull yarn all the way through loop so tail is on the outside of the basket. Pull this yarn end back through the space or an adjacent one so that it is now on the inside of the basket. Use this length of yarn to make the other pom poms – hold it on the inside and grab it with your hook from the space of the next pom pom and repeat steps. Once pom poms are complete, pull yarn through to inside of basket and tie to original tail. Knot twice and cut ends.
